Augur partnered with the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) to create a national support framework ensuring children who lose a parent are seen, supported, and guided with care.

Identifying What’s Missing: Support for Grieving Children

According to Swedish law, children who have lost a parent have the right to have their needs for information, advice, and support considered. There was a need to develop routines, support systems and tools necessary to ensure these children and their families are cared for in equitable and sufficient ways.

An insight driven and co-creating approach

Augur teamed up with representatives from 6 Swedish regions to collect insights, understand barriers, learn about success stories and co-create solutions. We also interviewed a range of health care professionals, firemen, priests and school nurses who can all be important points of contact for children who lost a parent.

Designing for Impact: Tools and Structures for Real Change

The fundamental needs of children and their families were carefully identified and summarized. Additionally, we created a stakeholder map outlining the various institutions and professionals involved in supporting children and their families—an essential tool for designing effective processes and routines.

To further strengthen regional support systems, we developed Aktivitetsträdet, a new framework designed to enhance routines and services. Its primary goal is to ensure that children who suddenly lose a parent are recognized and provided with the necessary information, guidance, and support they need.

The support framework was published in March 2024 and is available here https://www.socialstyrelsen.se/ser-du-mig/sakra-stodet-till-barn-som-anhoriga/
